BARRIE MAN FUMING OVER PRICES, PLANS TO LOBBY, PICKET SOME STATIONS

  By Raymond Bowe
Everyone fumes about gasline prices, but Bob Taylor plans to do something about it.
That means lobbying government and picketing at stations with habitually high prices, he said.
The city resident is "appalled" that Barrie gas prices seem to be "obscenely" higher compared to other smaller towns in the area.
"They see Barrie as rich pickings. It's pure greed," Taylor said, adding part of the problem is complacency among customers. "We're like lost sheep. They need someone to do something."
Taylor's beef isn't with one particular company, but one of the country's largest, Petro-Canada, said it doesn't have a policy to handle such demonstrations.

TAYLOR SAYS RESPONCE FROM THE PUBLIC HAS BEEN POSITIVE

"I'm not aware of a policy to address that specifically," Petro-Canada spokesperson Michael Southern said yesterday from Mississauga, "but the safety of our employees and our guests are our first priority.     "We certainly understand the frustration people feel," Southern added, "and people obviously have a right to express their opinions and we respect that. Hopefully, it doesn't have to come to that."     A couple weeks ago, Taylor said gas prices in the Markham area hovered between 72 and 75 cents, while a south-end Barrie gas station was charging close to 89 cents. So he went into some stations to ask why there was such a discrepancy.

Station workers told him it costs more to transport the fuel here, which Taylor called "a load of crap," and makes no sence when prices are lower farther north in places such as Stayner.     "The excuses are very poor. There is no excuse," Taylor said. "What annoys me most is at the end of the day, it all comes from the same holes."     Taylor moved to Canada from England - which has some of the world's highest petrol prices - about nine months ago. Back home, he started petitions and organized blockades, something he now wants to see happen here.     "We turned a lof of people away and the gas stations started listening," he said.     Taylor plans to bring that same moxie here.

"Everybody I've talked to says, 'count me in,' and 'that's a bloody good idea'" hesaid. "I've had no negative responses. It's been all positive."     Taylor has set up an email account at gaslobby@hotmail.com for anyone who wants to contact him and get involved     "If we can get this off the ground and get it running, I think we have a chance (to make a difference)," Taylor said. "We should be able to at least get a fair deal and be priced the same as Toronto."
